About BME

Established in 2005, the Department of Biomedical Engineering of Peking University was one of the fundamental departments of Peking University's College of Engineering. From its establishment, BME department commits itself onto cutting-edge life science and medical research in the context of engineering technology. We have established the graduate education system, with fruitful progress on the biomedical engineering research. Right now, the key research interests are:

1)    Nano-medicine for the major diseases diagnosis and therapy;

2)    Biological materials and regenerative medicine;

3)    Biomechanics and bioinformatics;

4)    Molecular medical imaging;

5)    Minimal-invasive medicine;

6)    Neural medical engineering;

7)    Mobile / remote medical and health informatics.

Since the very beginning, BME department is boasted of its strong academic research. It has undertaken many international, national, and regional research projects, such as the National Key Basic Research Program (973), the National High Technology Research and Development Program (863), National Natural Science Foundation, and a large number of international cooperation projects. The total amount of the research fund is growing steadily each year.

Currently, the BME department has a vibrant team of young researchers, including 4 full professors, 4 associate professors, 6 distinguished research professors. With international education background, all of them are actively engaged in the forefront of research and education. They are conducting the cutting-edge research on a broad aspect of biomedical engineering.

We have built a very strong tie with the world’s best universities such as the Georgia Institute of Technology, Johns Hopkins University, MIT, and Harvard University. Among these collaborations, we have established international collaboration with GIT-Emory University. We have set up the first joint Ph. D. program approved by the Office of Degree, State Council of China. 30 Ph. D. students has been enrolled in the program.

Since 2010, we initiated the undergraduate education, with the emphasis of “Strengthen the foundation, Attention to quality, Pursuit of innovation”. We are dedicated on developing our students to be inter-discipline talents and leaders with a solid theoretical foundation and expertise, great integration capabilities, and a strong innovative sense.

We are committed to the graduate study also. For students from different disciplines, we have established a series of graduate courses including Introduction to biomedical engineering, biomedical engineering, the mathematical basis of the biological basis of biomedical engineering, biosensors and biomedical instrumentation, bio-modeling and simulation of medical systems, biomedical materials, nano/ micro and single-molecule technology, bio-mechanics (solid, fluid and cell mechanics), laser medicine, magnetic resonance theory, and the principle of sequencing etc.
